Report

Active Public Concerns

  • County Wells & Metering – The concept of metering all new wells continues to be unappealing to the public (and has been since its enactment in 2017). The appropriate channels of contact to contest well metering are ambiguous, appearing to land somewhere between the jurisdiction of the Board of County Commissioners, the County Planning Commission, and/or the Yakima County Water Resource System (YCWRS, which is part of the county's Building & Fire Safety division).

***If you want to learn more about well metering and why our county is doing it, we recommend checking out the document below.

  • Alternate Permitting for RVs –  Yakima County has specific codes around occupying an Recreational Vehicle. Apparently, code enforcement took issue with someone occupying an RV in the name of caring for their elderly parents' farm. It sounds like issues of this nature are fairly widespread. In lieu of Yakima's housing crisis.
  • Naches Urban Growth – Similar to Russia making a grab for Ukraine, the town of Naches is trying to be more than one stoplight big. Our County Planning Commission isn't sure how to handle such rapid expansion. The Commission held a public hearing. At least 20 members of the community came forward to voice their opinions.

Other Matters

  • Ambulance Contracting - The County Commissioners have decided to contract with AMR (American Medical Response) instead of ALS (Advanced Life Systems). While ALS has protested and appealed this decision, all three Commissioners have claimed due diligence was done in deciding to contract with AMR. This included hiring a third party consultant to "ensure a fair process."
